WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES - A TRADITION OF LOVE

Anniversaries are a great time to show the one you love just how much you appreciate them, and remember the day on which a special event with them took place. Some couples celebrate the day they first met, others the day the marriage proposal occurred, and of course just about all married couples celebrate the annual return of their wedding date.

The origins of wedding anniversary commemorations stem back to the Holy Roman Empire. The husband crowned his wife with a silver head-dress on their 25th anniversary, and a golden one on the 50th. We continue today to commemorate these two hallmark anniversary milestones, and if you want to read more about how to celebrate them in style, you can find further information in these sections: Silver wedding anniversary and Golden wedding anniversary.

Principally in the 20th century, the recognition of anniversaries grew to become an annual occasion which was represented by a gift.

In the Commonwealth territories, a couple can be sent a message from the monarch on their 60th, 65th, and 70th wedding anniversary, and subsequently any anniversary thereafter. This is achieved by application to Buckingham Palace (United Kingdom), or to the Governor-General's agency in other Commonwealth nations.

In Canada, one can also receive a message from the Governor General for the 50th anniversary, and every 5th anniversary after that.

The situation is similar in Australia, where a couple can be sent a congratulatory letter from the Governor-General on their 50th anniversary, and all proceeding wedding anniversaries. Other leading members of parliament may also send their acknowledgements for those anniversaries. These include the Prime Minister, Federal Opposition Leader, as well as local members of parliament (both federal and state).

In the United States, a couple can be sent greetings from the President in relation to the 50th wedding anniversary, or a subsequent anniversary occasion.

Roman Catholics are eligible to apply for a Papal blessing through their local diocese for significant milestone anniversaries (25th, 50th, 60th, etc).

Many men give flowers, a gift and a card to their wives on an anniversary. Many of our customers combine the flowers and gift of a beautiful Eternity Rose, which is generally displayed in a prominent place as a reminder of the love shared by the couple. Furthermore, if you want to give your loved one a different Eternity Rose each anniversary, you can choose one that matches the colour theme of the particular anniversary year (eg, 2nd anniversary = red; 13th anniversary = white; 20th anniversary = platinum; 25th anniversary = silver; 50th anniversary = golden etc.). You can read our section on Anniversary Gifts by Year to find out more information on this subject.

One day we will talk our Prime Minister into sending out Eternity Roses for special anniversaries. Until then, you can delight your loved one via the simple process of ordering from our website.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY from the team at The Eternity Rose.
